The funeral of Phillip Portwood, Mayor of Ealing from 1999 to 2000 and former councillor of East Acton ward who passed away last month (17 November 2023) has taken place at Mortlake Crematorium (12 December 2023).
Mr Portwood, 65, was an Ealing Labour Councillor from 1984 to 2006. He was a councillor for the former Victoria ward from 1984 to 2002 and then from 2002 to 2006 he represented East Acton ward.
As the Millennium mayor, Mr Portwood was assisted by his mother Joan as the Millennium Mayoress. His mother passed away in 2013 while his father passed away in 2010.
A life long resident of East Acton, Mr Portwood was a pupil at the local John Perryn Primary School from 1963 to 1969. In 1982, he was appointed a governor of the school.
Mr Portwood was also very active for Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) where he was involved in its West Middlesex branch.
Writing on X (formerly known as Twitter), Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Hitesh Tailor said: “Today, we paid our respects to East #Acton‘s very own Phil Portwood, former Councillor and Past Mayor, aka the Millennium Mayor. Phil was a loyal member of the Labour Party, Cooperative Party and served 22 years as an Ealing councillor. And was also an active member of CAMRA.”

In a response to Councillor Crawford’s posting, Northolt Mandeville Councillor Miriam Rice added: “It was wonderful to see so much love for Phil yesterday, and I think some in Ealing forget just how popular Phil was with co-operators and others outside of Ealing too.”
When the death of Mr Portwood was announced, Ealing’s Mayor office said: “Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family at this very difficult time.”
The family requested no flowers at his funeral. Donations in Mr Portwood’s memory can be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity close to his heart.
