Descendants celebrates 30th anniversary

Acton-based Descendants, a charity for young people which explores African and Caribbean history and culture, celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special event at Acton Gardens Community Centre last month (25 May 2024).

Hundreds of people gathered to congratulate the work Descendants does and the impact it has made across the community.

Visitors to Acton Gardens also saw performances from Twyford Kingdom Choir, Stardust Steel Orchestra, Mahoghany Carnival Arts,  Acquaye, Wappy’s Akuwa and Bollo Youth’s young artists – K Pulse, BLXZD, JT and Arcain.

A Descendants spokesperson told EALING.NEWS what it means to hit 30: “Descendants was built out of a cultural need to support the local community and provide opportunities to engage with African and Caribbean history/culture in an accessible and safe way.”

They added: “It is humbling and overwhelming that our charity has been able to celebrate three decades and continue to engage with people and organisations who share the vision we have. From The Priory to Acton Gardens Community Centre, we want to acknowledge and thank all the volunteers, supporters and friends of Descendants who have journeyed with us.”
