Ealing Council takes action after rat infestation found on Perfect Peri Peri premises in West Ealing

A far from perfect takeaway in West Ealing that was forced to close in 2023 after Ealing Council food safety inspectors found flies and rat droppings on its premises has been fined over £12,000 for its health and hygiene breaches.

Perfect Peri Peri at 2 Broadway in West Ealing, which sells grilled and fried chicken, kebabs, pizzas and burgers, was taken to Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court last month which heard that since 2021, the takeaway had 3 zero ratings for food hygiene.

On 1 February 2023, Ealing Council revealed that it’s food safety team visited the premises unannounced and discovered shocking conditions.

In a statement, the council said: “Officers uncovered evidence of a rat infestation, with faeces found throughout the premises, including near sauce containers, in store rooms and under sinks. Drain flies were also seen inside dough mixers in the basement and on boards used for preparing pizza dough. Conditions were exacerbated by a very poor standard of cleaning.”

As a result of the unhygienic conditions Perfect Peri Peri was ordered to close immediately and was served with an an emergency hygiene notice under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.  The takeaway reopened three weeks later following food safety officers confirming the needed remedial works had been carried out correctly.

Its most recent food hygiene rating from 24 July 2023 was a 2 out of 5 which means improvement necessary.

As a result of its failures, LHR Enterprise Ltd Trading (the takeaway operator) and the company director, Syed Biabani of Flat 32 Madison Heights, 17-27 High Street, Hounslow pled guilty and were prosecuted at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court for four food hygiene offences and had to pay more than £19,000.

LHR Enterprise Ltd Trading was fined £12,000 and Mr Miabani £1,920. Ealing Council was also awarded full costs associated of £3,630 and the company were ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £2,000.

Councillor Louise Brett, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes said: “This case is another great example of the hard work our food safety team do to ensure that all businesses in the borough are safe places to eat.”

Councillor Brett added: “Fly and rodent infestations put our residents at a very real risk of sickness and clamping down on those that are consistently non-compliant is essential to protecting our residents’ health. We will continue to support local businesses to ensure that all food sold in the borough is safe and legal.”
