The leader of the opposition of Ealing Council, Liberal Democrat Councillor Gary Malcolm is now up to day 9 of taking on the challenge to complete 10,000 steps a day in October to raise money for Shelter, a charity which campaigns and provides help and advice for people needing housing or facing homelessness.
Councillor Malcolm, who represents Southfield ward is determined to hit at least 310,000 steps in October come rain or shine and has updated EALING.NEWS on the challenge he has set himself.
How have you been getting on to achieving 10k a day walking in Ealing?
By doing a few laps around a local park (Southfield Recreation Ground) plus walking around the flat you can get about 12,000 steps a day so I do one walk before work and one in the middle of the day sometimes trying to do food shopping as a walk.
What has been the longest ever walking you have done previously?
I once did a long long hike in the South Downs and did 55,000 steps!
Some predict rain and snow this month, how have you prepared for that?
I am also a mountaineer so I am happy to go out in wet weather gear to keep me dry and warm.
Why is it important to support Shelter?
Shelter does a lot of great campaigns and currently with the cost of living crisis many more tenants need advice in terms of their rights to avoid issues from dodgy landlords.
