LibDem parliamentary candidate for Ealing Central and Acton calls on Dominic Raab to resign as an MP

The prospective Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Ealing Central and Acton, Alastair Mitton, has called on former Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab to also resign as an MP and “make room for decency in politics”.

The comments come following a report into bullying by the MP for Esher and Walton in which he resigned as Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minsiter following its publication. The inquiry was conducted by lawyer Adam Tolley KC who upheld two of the allegations against Mr Raab.

But Alastair Mitton, who will be the Liberal Democrat candidate at the next general election for Ealing Central and Acton, said it is also time for Mr Raab to go an MP: “Liberal Democrats say that justice is finally meted out to Justice Secretary and Deputy PM Dominic Raab. As anyone who has been bullied knows it affects the very fabric of your being. Bullies are frequently narcissistic & devoid of empathy.”

Mr Raab said in a statement: “I am genuinely sorry for any unintended stress or offence that any official felt, as a result of the pace, standards and challenge that I brought to the Ministry of Justice. That is, however, what the public expect of Ministers working on their behalf. In setting the threshold for bullying so low, this inquiry has set a dangerous precedent. It will encourage spurious complaints against Ministers, and have a chilling effect on those driving change on behalf of your government – and ultimately the British people.”

Mr Mitton added: “He clearly has no place in public life and should now resign as an MP. This sorry episode exposes the rot at the core of the Conservative Party. The fact that he was allowed to stand as a candidate, become a MP, become a minister and rise to be Deputy PM shows just how blinkered and entitled they are. They should go and make room for decency in politics.”
