Ealing Council plans to ramp up tree planting by signing up residents and businesses to sponsor trees in the borough

As part of its ambitious plans to plant 50,000 trees by 2026, Ealing Council has partnered with Trees for Streets which will allow residents and businesses to sponsor tree planting in streets and parks in Acton, Ealing, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt, Perivale and Southall.

Trees for Streets is a national street tree sponsorship scheme which has secured support from the Mayor of London. For every tree sponsored another one will be sponsored directly by the Mayor.

For a street tree, residents and business sponsors will pay £170 if they wish to water the tree themselves or £275 if they want the Council to do the watering for three years.

For a park tree, the cost is £400 and to add a plaque to it costs an additional cost of £450.

According to Trees for Streets and Ealing Council, the scheme is “helping the council’s tree budget to go further”.

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, deputy leader of Ealing Council and cabinet member for climate action said: “We’re constantly looking at new ways to increase our tree planting budget and add to our main tree planting programme. The Trees for Streets scheme is a really exciting opportunity, which raises additional funds for tree planting through both public sponsorship and corporate fundraising.”

She added: “We’re looking forward to local residents getting involved in greening their neighbourhoods and helping us reach our target of planting 50,000 across Ealing by 2026.’’

Trees for Streets has developed both a website and smartphone app that allows people to sponsor trees locally. They do this by sending through a request to the council and if the location is suitable arrangements will be made to plant the tree.

Simeon Linstead, founder and project director of Trees for Streets added: “Trees for Streets enables people to make a difference to the world immediately on their doorstep, by working together with their local council. It’s fantastic to have Ealing on board as our newest partner, and we hope to inspire and empower the local community to take a leading role in greening the streets of their borough. This injection of funding Trees for Streets is a project by Trees for Cities from the Mayor of London means even more trees can be planted to benefit local residents.”
