Polling stations close for General Election 2024 : Ealing decides

Voters in Ealing and across the country have had their say today (4 July 2024) on who they want to govern the UK and represent them locally.

The polling stations opened at 7am today and closed at 10pm for the General Election taking place. Counting of the votes will start around 11pm with the results expected to be announced between 3:30am and 4:30pm on Friday (5 July 2024).

In Ealing, three constituencies are being contested – Ealing Central and Acton with an electorate of 78,436 and eight candidates standing, Ealing North with an electorate of 74,820 which also has eight candidates standing and Ealing Southall with an electorate of 78,669 and 12 candidates.

In total there is an electorate of 231,925 across the three constituencies. For this year’s election, 65,684 postal votes were issued.

Dr Rupa Huq has held Ealing Central and Action since 2015 and in 2019 she had a 13,300 majority over the Conservatives. James Murray has held Ealing North since 2019 where he had a 12,269 majority over the Conservatives. Virendra Sharma was MP for Ealing Southall from 2007 to 2024 and in 2019 he had a 16,084 majority over the Conservatives.

Mr Sharma stood down on 27 May 2024 and Ealing Council deputy leader Deirdre Costigan was chosen as the new Labour candidate to contest Ealing Southall in the General Election.
